We saved Tina the turkey this Christmas!
Thanks to the concerted effort of Thames Valley Vegans and Vegetarians (T3V) and others from around the country, Tina the turkey was saved from the usual fate this Christmas.
The Foxy & Tom Breakfast show on 2tenFM radio ran a story throughout December on whether or not to save this free-range turkey. The on-line poll on whether to kill or save her swayed precariously one way then the other throught the month. This could seem pretty sick, but then it was exposing a sick practice to the consciousness of thosands of listeners.
T3V's Sophie Fenwick-Paul fed Foxy & Tom yummy vegan Christmas food live on air, which was raptuously received. Then email groups and lists throughout the country were alerted to Tina's plight and did their bit. Foxy campaigned to save her, even persuading some sandwich shops to take turkey off the menu (though they kept the other dead animals).
And then came the offer they couldn't refuse. Rachel
and her family, who look after many rescued domestic fowl, offered to
adopt Tina and her buddy Tanya. The vote just had to go our way, and it
did, with allegedly 52% voting to save Tina.
Thanks
Thanks to 2tenFM for honourably saving a real turkey (2 in fact) as a result of this, rather than making it all up.
Thanks especially to Rachel and her family for taking in Tina & her buddy Tanya to their loving home, where they can live out their natural lives.
Thanks to Coral for alerting us to this story in the first place
Thanks to all those locally and nationally who voted to save Tina on-line and contacted 2tenFM to speak up for her and cruelty-free eating. Thanks too to all those who donated to the save/feed Tina fund at the T3V Christmas party.
Together we made it happen!
